Exercise in Dangerous

Despite being up all night (when you are still wide awake at 5 am it is rarely a good thing), I got up around 7 am this morning.  I knew I had a full day ahead of me.  I had a half day of work and then a funeral to attend this afternoon.  I managed to make it through the morning activities without any issues and was ready to go when Mr. Monkeygirl came home from work.

The service was very nice and it turned out to be a beautiful day.  Mental note to self - next time don't wear 4 inch spike heels to a grave side service after a few days of rain.  I managed to tip-toe across the lawn without tripping on anything or falling over.  Standing still proved to be a bigger challenge.  As soon as I stopped moving I started to list backwards at an alarming speed as my heels slid into the soft earth beneath my feet.  I kept envisioning myself tilting backwards directly into the tent supports and collapsing the entire tent.  Not wanting to make a scene or cause any more distress I decided to kick off my heels.  It was kind of nice to feel the cool earth beneath my toes after the long winter.

I managed to make it back to the car barefoot without stabbing myself with a stick or kicking a grave marker.  Things were looking up.  We shared a wonderful meal with the family and then headed home.  Wanting to make the most of a nice day and to try to work off a huge meal, Mr. M and I decided to take Coal for a walk.

We managed to cross busy streets without incident and didn't have any problems with other walkers (Coal loves to greet people by jumping on them).  About halfway through the walk my world suddenly got wobbly.  The long winter and a wicked thunderstorm over the weekend managed to bring down a plethora of gum balls from the sweet gum trees in our neighborhood.  I didn't see the spiky little ball that snuck under my shoe but I felt my ankle start to turn.  I tried to replant my foot to gather my footing and another one of those sneaky little buggers sent me reeling in an equal but opposite direction.  I was going dawn and there was no stopping the momentum.

I tried to brace myself and not lose hold of the leash.  Unfortunately Coal's path and mine intersected part way to the ground and I took him down to the ground with me.  Instinctively trying to cushion my fall and not break the dog's legs, I wrapped my arms around him and used the poor dog as a canine air bag.  The dog is fine and bounced right back up without even the slightest whimper or yelp.  Me, on the other hand, I have a scrapped up palm and knee and a seriously bruised ego.  Of course there was a young man walking home from the bus stop directly across the street from us.  He had the good manners not to laugh out loud at my stupid clumsiness.

Let's see how I feel in the morning. I know understand what Skaterboy feels like when he flings himself off a skateboard at high speeds!

Good lord, girl! Don't be taking those kinds of tips from me, ever. I am the most graceless creature created.

Glad you're not too badly hurt! Those are the kinds of incidents where you can break something.

I am thankful I didn't really hurt myself or Coal! I think I am going to find another route next time!
